In July 2008 the school was rated as satisfactory and since then the government has encouraged Ofsted to conduct short-notice monitoring inspections of satisfactory schools to ensure that they are making appropriate progress. We were contacted by Ofsted on the morning of 22 June to inform us they would be in the next day. Two inspectors spent the day in school speaking extensively to staff, students and observing a number of lessons.

I am pleased to say that the report (copy enclosed) is very encouraging and indicates that the school is on the right track and making good progress, particularly in raising standards and improving the quality of teaching in lessons. Whilst I am pleased with the progress made we still have much work to do to realise our ambition of making the school truly outstanding.

Thank you for your support in helping us move the school forward and we look forward to working closely with you in the coming years.

Parents of students in the Bedlington partnership have attended a super learning day workshop at Bedlingtonshire Community High School.

The workshop, which was part delivered by year 9 and 10 students looked at enquiry learning and parental involvement.

Amy Robson, a year 10 students at Bedlington High School helped lead the session, she told us, "I was a bit nervous at the start, after all, it's not every day that you have to stand up and teach a group of parents."

"We delivered a workshop on enquiry learning and how it's different to the learning that may have taken place when these parents were at school. They all found it really interesting."
The project, part funded by the Creative Partnership Programme through Tyne and Wear Museums also looked at how parents engage with their children at home and support learning outside school.
School principal, Kieran McGrane told us why these sessions were important. "People underestimate the impact that home learning and parental support can have in the success of child. Here at Bedlington, we work with parents and allow the sharing of good practice between parents, students and staff so that everyone has a voice."

The editorial team were delighted with the launch and response, Chelsea Mason, one of team told us what the magazine meant to her. "Getting the sponsorship from RioTinto Alcan has been a real boost and has helped turn our ideas into reality.
The High Sheriff of Northumberland has visited students at Bedlington High School.

The students, who take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme at the school, spent the afternoon showing the High Sheriff, Katie Crosbie-Dawson the equipment they use on their expeditions. The students were from Bedlingtonshire Community High School and St Benet Biscop Roman Catholic High School.

Tom Gibbard, a sixth form student at Bedlington High told us about the visit. "It was the first time I'd met the High Sheriff, she was very friendly and took a real interest in what we'd been getting involved in. She even wished me 'good luck' for me forthcoming A-Level exams." The High Sheriff presented a cheque to the team for £350 which will allow them to up grade their camping equipment.

The students are part of a group of 30 students who are currently completing their Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Bedlington. Assistant principal and keen mountaineer, Will Close-Ash told us why the award was important. "The Duke of Edinburgh's Award gives young people in our area an opportunity to help others whilst developing their own confidence. The expedition element is often the part of the award the most people find challenging and memorable. We are delighted that the High Sheriff, with the support of the Community Foundation, has been able to support future expeditions here at school."

Students from Bedlingtonshire Community High School have overcome local challenges and started their very own walking club. The team of twelve Year 9 students had to secure funding to purchase walking kit and arrange their own transport, and have succeeded in running their first day walk.

Jessica White, 13, said, "We wanted the walking club to be open to any student in our year group, irrespective of their background or where they came from. We have had a fantastic response. We've spent the past few months developing our navigation, teamwork and leadership skills."

The team of students chose the beautiful Northumberland coastline as the scene for their first trek, taking in the villages of Boulmer, Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle.

The group, believed to be the first walking club set up in the school was set up in memory of their former teacher and avid walker Alastair Aitken. Alastair tragically lost his life in the Scottish Highlands at the end of last year. "We want to climb the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis." Liam Bessford, 13, said. "After that, we'd like to go to the Alps and do the same trek that Mr Aitken did and raise money for charity."

Principal Kieran McGrane said, "It's not often that our students get a chance to take to the hills. Alastair led a school trip to the Alps last year and he was a great believer in getting our young people out into the countryside because he knew how much they benefited from the experience. It's great to see our students taking on the challenge themselves, we're very proud of them."

Students at Bedlingtonshire High School have spent the day preparing for the London 2012 Olympic Games with members of Team GB.

The students, from year 9 have taken part in an enterprise activity where they have found out first hand what it's like to prepare for an Olympic Event. The students helped plan budgets for the games, organise transportation and even designed a new state of the art stadium.

Liam Bessford (13) from Bedlington enjoyed the challenge; he told us "It was really interesting seeing a different side to the Olympics. Everyone knows about the events, but I don't think people realise just how much effort goes into organising them."

James Edge from The British Olympic Foundation ran the sessions. "The British Olympic Foundation is here to inspire and challenge young people and develop the Olympic Spirit. All over the country, young people are taking part in activities which will give them an opportunity to be part of London 2012. The students here at Bedlington have thrown themselves into the session and have been a real credit to the community."
Janet Roberts, head of PE at Bedlington was delighted with the day. "Bringing the Olympics to the UK was huge achievement and I'm just pleased that our students have had a chance to taste of that excitement."
There are just over 800 days left until the Olympic torch arrives in London.

Government joins families of victims to put an end to knife crime -

Thousands of young people will be asked to join a campaign to put an end to knife crime, the Prime Minister will announce today. To launch Count Me In: Together We Can Stop Knife Crime week the Government has joined forces with Families Utd, a charitable organisation representing the families of victims of knife crime.

The Government and Families Utd aim to get thousands of young people to join an online campaign to end knife crime. Hosted through the Families Utd website and Facebook, young people will be urged to join the campaign with a week of activity in and around schools across the country.

Young people will be directed to the websites where they can join a group to give their support to the campaign. The websites will contain advice, routes to further support and testimonies from the families and communities affected by knife crime.

Speaking ahead of the launch in Lambeth, the Prime Minister said: "I'm very proud to support Families Utd. Their unity comes from shared tragedy and their loss is the most powerful warning there is against carrying a knife. I believe young people want to see an end to knife crime, just as we all do, and I believe the power to make that happen is as much in their hands as it is ours. So this week we're asking them to sign the pledge and say "Count Me In" to a world without knife crime."

Schools Minister Vernon Coaker said: "Knife crime has a devastating impact on the families and communities affected. The victims' families have to live with the tragic consequences of knife crime for the rest of their lives - this is deeply saddening.

As a result of Government action, knife-related crime and murders are on the decrease. But we are not complacent - we know that more needs to be done to eradicate knife crime in this country. Government alone cannot solve this problem, which is why we are calling on young people to join the campaign to help us end knife crime.

I am very grateful to Families Utd for their support. From their tragic experiences, they have become the driving force behind this nationwide campaign to end knife crime. We know that that the vast majority of young people are law-abiding, hard-working and are horrified by the crimes these families suffered. I would urge all young people to stand up and be counted and to join Count Me In, because only by working together can we hope to stop knife crime."

Count Me In Week will be reinforced with new classroom materials to help teachers talk to young people about knife crime and serious youth violence. The materials, supported by Families Utd and the Kids Taskforce, will be available to all schools online and distributed to almost 300,000 primary school pupils in the areas most affected by knife crime.

The founding members of Families Utd joined together to start a campaign to help other families affected by knife crime, following the tragic deaths of their children as a result of serious youth violence.

For the families involved, Count Me In Week will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the impact knife crime has on families and the wider community. It is also a chance to alert other knife crime victims' families to their organisation and to make them aware of the support available to them.

Home Secretary Alan Johnson said: "We are determined to rid our streets of serious youth violence. We have made some encouraging progress, most recent crime statistics show that knife murders have fallen by a third.

Police action and powers are vital in tackling knife crime, but so is education and prevention - showing young people the consequences and helping them to make other choices. This week is a great opportunity for young people to take a stand against the small minority who commit these serious crimes and spread the message that they won't tolerate knife crime. By working together we will make our streets and communities safer."

Sally Knox said: "It is an honour to work with Families United in Supporting the Count Me in Campaign. I truly believe that we need to get into schools and educate young people about street violence and respect. Together with the other families who have suffered similar tragedies and the government we can make a difference to the future of young people on our streets."

Barry Mizen said: "Count Me In is a chance for all the young people of this country to add their voice, and display in a tangible way, their desires to bring improvements to our communities. It is all too easy nowadays to brand young people as aggressive and confrontational, when in fact that is far from the truth and most want to show they have much to offer and can be part of the solution. We should support and encourage them as they come behind families who have lost loved ones to violent crime and are seeking to work for changes to the attitudes and actions that blight our communities. All of us have a part to play in bringing peace, whether it's the fear we feel on our streets, or our concerns for our own children or grandchildren, or indeed our elderly relatives, and together we can."

A group of year 10 students from Bedlingtonshire community high School are celebrating this week after winning their local basketball league.

The team of 6 students have been competing in the league against other schools in the Wansbeck area including Ashington and King Edward the 6th high School in Morpeth. The lads, inspired by their local League team, the Newcastle Eagles, started the league for the first time this year with little hope of winning. "It was really the first season that we'd played together, so we were just hoping that we'd finish near the top." Chris Brown, who plays centre, told us.

The Bedlington team were in second place behind Morpeth with one game left to play and in a exciting match, managed to snatch victory and take the league title. They will now represent the county. School principal, Kieran McGrane, himself a PE teacher, was delighted. "This highlights the talent and determination the students at Bedlington have, we're all really proud of the lads."
