Students from Bedlingtonshire community High school have spent the afternoon working with fire officers from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services.
The students, who are following a uniformed public services course, spent the afternoon looking at the role the fire brigade take during road traffic collisions. A team of 8 fire officers along with tow fire engines came to the school to demonstrate how the fire brigade manage the scene of an accident and safely remove a trapped casualty from a vehicle. Fire Officer Craig Ducat told us why this training was important. "The fire service are always looking at ways of raising awareness among young people about the dangers associated with driving at high speeds. We find one of the best ways is to come into schools and give practical demonstrations to the students on the sort of incidents we deal with.
Danielle Snaith, a year 10 student, had the opportunity to don a fire tunic and helmet and took part in the scenario. "I was nervous to start with, but once I got into the car and the fireman started to work around me and secure me I felt much calmer." She told us about the course she is following. "The uniformed public services course is ideal for any student interested in working in the fire service or other uniformed services. I'm thinking about joining the fire brigade or the police service and I've learned about them whilst following this course."
